Marie is introduced in her bedroom, talking to her boyfriend David. They kiss, he falls into a coma, and she leaves home. She meets Logan in a bar in Alberta, stows away in his truck, and is with him for the whole of the first film, which is her story more than his.
She is the reason the mutant metaphor works in these films. Her power has no upside. It cannot be trained, it cannot be aimed, and it makes ordinary affection dangerous, which is why The Last Stand offering a cure lands on her harder than on anyone else. The film gives her a choice that the audience argues about to this day.
