Remy LeBeau / Gambit

The one that got away

Remy LeBeauX-MenEarth-10005

A Cajun card sharp who can pour explosive energy into anything he touches, and who has been almost in these films for twenty years.

Remy LeBeau is a Cajun mutant who can charge any object with kinetic energy and make it explode, which the films have almost always shown him doing with a playing card. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine he is a man Stryker held captive and lost, living in New Orleans, who fights Logan on a rooftop before agreeing to take him to the island. In Deadpool & Wolverine he lives in the Void alongside Blade and Elektra, opposing Cassandra Nova.

He is the clearest example of what happened to this film series. He was supposed to be much more than this.

Taylor Kitsch played him in 2009 and Channing Tatum in 2024, and they are not presented as the same man: the second lives in the Void with a much heavier accent. Gambit was written into X2, where James Bamford was cast, and cut. He was cut from The Last Stand. Tatum was set to play him in Apocalypse, and was cut from that too, and the solo film that was meant to follow was pushed back repeatedly, lost several directors, and was shelved in 2019 after Disney bought Fox.

Tatum has been announced to return in Avengers: Doomsday.
