A group of young scientists build a machine that opens onto another dimension, use it on themselves without permission, and come back wrong.
The reboot takes the team’s origin somewhere genuinely different. There is no space station and no cosmic storm. There is a transdimensional gate, built by teenagers, tested by them at night without authorisation, and the place on the other side changes what comes back. For about forty minutes it plays as a body horror film about a laboratory, and it is good.
Then it stops. What is on screen after that point is the result of a production that had turned into an argument.

It is stylised on screen as Fant4stic, in capitals. Reshoots were ordered in January 2015, and the cut that was released was assembled by Stephen Rivkin rather than by the director Josh Trank.
Trank said in 2020 that a great deal of what he had planned was never filmed at all, which makes a director’s cut, in his words, practically nonexistent. The running time recorded here, a hundred minutes, is the only one that exists.
