A police officer whose family was killed by the Mafia has spent five years underground killing criminals, and then the Yakuza arrive and change the arithmetic.
Dolph Lundgren plays Frank Castle as a man who has already finished grieving and has settled into the work. The film gives him no skull on the chest and no speeches. It gives him the city’s sewer system to live in, skull-engraved throwing knives, and a hundred and twenty-five dead mobsters behind him before the film starts, and it is notably uninterested in asking whether any of that is a good idea.
It is the first live-action Punisher, made at a moment when nobody expected a Marvel adaptation to be anything other than an action film with a licence attached.

The catalogue records 5 October 1989, which is a West German theatrical date, because there is no United States theatrical date to record. The distributor, New World Pictures, collapsed financially, and the film went straight to VHS and Laserdisc in the United States in April 1991.
It played in cinemas nearly everywhere else and took about thirty million dollars against a nine million dollar budget. The country that made it is the one that did not see it in a cinema.
