Ben Grimm is the cost of the accident. The other three can pass in the street; he cannot, and the film puts him in a neighbourhood that knows him rather than in isolation, which is a kinder choice than the character usually gets.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays him warm and unbothered on the surface, which makes the moments where it slips the most affecting thing in the film.
