Four astronauts who came back from a mission changed have been famous for four years, and something arrives that eats planets.
It skips the origin. When the film opens the team have been the Fantastic Four for four years, they are celebrities, Reed Richards’ inventions have moved the technology of the whole world forward and Sue Storm’s diplomacy has largely disarmed it. The film is not about how they got their powers. It is about what a family that famous does when the bill arrives.
The bill is Galactus, who eats planets because he is hungry and has been for longer than the Earth has existed, and who makes the team an offer that no story of this kind normally dares put on the table.
Show detailsWhy it is set in another universe
It takes place on Earth-828, not on the Earth the rest of the run happens on, and that is a production decision made early rather than a twist. Director Matt Shakman did not want a plot hole about where a team this powerful was during Avengers: Infinity War, and Kevin Feige has described the alternate setting as freeing.
It also lets the film be a period piece. The comics were made by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee in the 1960s, and this is a 1960s that kept its own idea of the future, built out of the optimism of the space race rather than out of nostalgia.
