Shang-Chi is the son of Ying Li, who guarded a mystical village called Ta Lo, and of Wenwu, who founded the Ten Rings. He was trained from childhood as an assassin by his father and has spent a decade in California pretending to be nobody, which the film treats as a legitimate strategy rather than as cowardice.
His single film is the best-structured origin in the later catalogue, because the antagonist is not a threat to the world for most of it. It is a grieving man who wants his wife back and has convinced himself he can hear her.
