A blind old man who taught a blind boy to see with everything else, wanted a soldier, and left when he found out the boy wanted a father.
Stick is a mysterious martial artist and Matt Murdock’s mentor, blind himself, and in his late nineties. Scott Glenn plays him. He approaches Matt as a boy after the accident that blinded him and trains him to hone his other senses until he can “see” with them, and teaches him to fight, because Stick wants a soldier for his secret war. He leaves when he realises the boy wants a father figure instead. The reader who sent this list summarised him as the man who trained Matt to master his skills despite his blindness, which is the version Matt would give too.
He is the leader of the Chaste, who wage a war against the Hand and its quest to retrieve the Black Sky, and that war is what brings him back in the second season and in The Defenders.

Marvel announced Glenn in September 2014. The showrunner Steven DeKnight had initially wanted Sonny Chiba, and Glenn, whom the writers had raised early on, was reconsidered after his performance in The Leftovers. He had never played a blind character before, and had to learn, in his words, completely about the world of comic books.
