In 1946 the woman who ran the super soldier programme is fetching coffee for the men she outranked, and running her own operation after hours.
Peggy Carter is the most competent person in every room she is in and is treated as a secretary in all of them, and the series is honest that this is the actual obstacle rather than a framing device. The cases are pulp, the period detail is exact, and Jarvis is the best comic performance in this part of the catalogue.
Two seasons, eighteen episodes, and one of the very few entries here that begins and ends on its own terms.
Show detailsClose to the films by design
Because Carter came out of a film, Marvel Studios stayed involved. The showrunners describe a liaison who would tell them what they could not touch, and Christopher Markus, who wrote the film she came from, noted that “you really only need to drop the tiniest bit of hint and its connected”.
The series claims to originate both the Black Widow programme and the Winter Soldier programme that the films would later use, and its second season introduces the substance that a later television series builds a character’s powers out of.
