The story starts again from the beginning, with a teenager, a spider, and a father who disappeared without explaining anything.
Five years after the last film in the previous series, Sony began again with a different director, a different cast and a different Peter Parker. This one is prickly, awkward in a specific modern way, and given a thread the earlier films did not have: his parents left when he was a child, and the film wants to know why.
Everything else you would expect is here, done again. The bite, the loss, the decision, the first villain. Watching it next to the 2002 film is the clearest demonstration in this catalogue of how much a story changes when only the tone is different.
