Mary Jane WatsonSpider-ManEarth-96283

The girl next door in a house nobody should be living in, who spends three films being told what she is to other people.

Mary Jane in these films is written from the outside, as the thing Peter wants, which is both the trilogy’s weakest habit and something the second film partially fixes. Kirsten Dunst plays her with more impatience than the script gives her, and the scenes where she asks Peter to simply say something plainly are the ones that hold up.

The home she comes from is drawn quickly and clearly: a father who shouts through a wall that Peter can hear from his own room.
