Spider-Man 3

A year after the last film, Peter Parker is winning at everything, and then a black substance from space arrives and starts agreeing with him.

Sam Raimi’s trilogy ends with the most crowded film he made. Peter is popular, Mary Jane is not, Harry Osborn has finally worked out who killed his father, Flint Marko is loose as the Sandman, and an alien symbiote latches on to the suit and makes its wearer meaner. Every one of those is a whole film.

What survives the overload is the idea underneath. The black suit does not give Peter anything he did not have. It removes the part of him that says no, and the film is at its best when it stops being a superhero story and becomes one about a young man enjoying being cruel.

There was to be a fourth. Development on Spider-Man 4 continued until it was cancelled, and Sony rebooted the series instead with a new cast and a new continuity, which is why the next Spider-Man film in this catalogue starts the character over from the beginning five years later.
