Odin

The Allfather

Odin BorsonThorEarth-616

The king of Asgard, who raised two sons on a story about his own reign that left out how he built it.

Odin Borson, also called the Allfather, is the ruler of Asgard, the son of Bor, the biological father of Hela and Thor, the adoptive father of Loki and the husband of Frigga. He is based on the Odin of Norse mythology, and Anthony Hopkins plays him for three films across seven years, in three quite different registers.

The first film has him as a father with a hard lesson to teach. The third reveals that the golden peace he ruled over was paid for by a conquest he buried, along with the daughter who carried it out. Very little in these films is as neatly retroactive as that, and it works because Hopkins plays the regret rather than the twist.

In 2013 Loki removes him from power and puts him under a spell that makes him forget his own life, leaving him in a retirement home in New York City while Loki wears his face on the throne. He breaks free of it before Ragnarok, and what he has left by then is one conversation.
