A force that predates light itself returns to undo the universe, and Thor has to take his brother out of prison to stop it.
The plot is the least memorable in this run and the film knows what it is doing when it stops being about the plot. The half worth watching is the pair of brothers, one of whom has just tried to conquer Earth, forced to work together and unable to be honest for a single scene.
Everything else is scaffolding. It is competent scaffolding, and the film moves.

Two things pass through here that later films depend on: an Infinity Stone, and a change to the relationship between Thor and Loki that the next several films assume you have seen.
Skipping it is survivable. You will feel the gap twice.
