A girl who does not have spider powers, but has a robot, and a spider in the robot who is her friend.
Peni Parker is a young Japanese-American girl from an anime-based universe who copilots her late father’s biomechanical suit with a radioactive spider. Kimiko Glenn plays her in both films.
She is the clearest statement of what Into the Spider-Verse is doing with animation. Every Spider-Person in the room is drawn in the style of their own universe: Peni at a different frame rate, with different linework and different eyes, standing next to a monochrome detective from the 1930s and a cartoon pig. Nothing else in this catalogue has tried that.
