The Ancient One is a teacher who is not what she claims. She trains the Masters of the Mystic Arts and forbids drawing power from the Dark Dimension, and she has been drawing power from the Dark Dimension for centuries, which is how she is still alive.
Tilda Swinton plays the hypocrisy without defending it. Her best scene is her last: dying, slowed to a stop between heartbeats, telling Strange that his arrogance and his fear are the same thing and that she never learnt to stop either.
