The man who was paid to deliver a child to his father, kept him instead, and never once told the child that this was a kindness.
Yondu is hired by Ego to collect his children from across the galaxy. He does it many times. Then he collects Peter Quill, works out what happens to the ones he delivers, and stops, which gets him thrown out of the Ravager clans and leaves him raising a boy he is not equipped to raise.
Michael Rooker plays him as somebody who has decided that being loved would be worse than being useful. The second film gives him the line the whole character was built for, and it is not a long line.
Minor spoiler
He dies saving Quill from Ego, giving him the only spacesuit. The funeral is attended by every Ravager clan that exiled him, which is the film telling you what they thought of the decision he made decades earlier.
