Nothing before this had gone this far from home. The gamble was whether an audience would follow a cast of people who had never appeared on screen before to a galaxy with its own politics, and the answer was that they would, if the film was funny and meant it.
The trick is that everyone in the group is broken in a specific way and none of them wants to admit it. The comedy comes from the avoidance, and the film earns its ending by finally letting them stop.
