Three metal gloves, one of which the studio had to decide, years later, was a fake.

The Infinity Gauntlet is the object the first ten years of this catalogue are pointed at. There are three of them.

The one Thanos wears is forged from uru by the Dwarves of Nidavellir and is left-handed. The one the Avengers build to undo his work is right-handed, made by Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and Rocket out of Stark nanotechnology. And the third has been sitting in Odin’s vault since 2011, when it was put there as a joke.

The gauntlet in Odin’s treasure room appeared in Thor as an Easter egg. Marvel Studios later realised it could not be the real one, since the real one had not been made yet, and settled internally on the idea that the Asgardian gauntlet was a fake. That decision is then written into Thor: Ragnarok, where Hela walks past it and says so out loud.

It is a rare case of a franchise correcting its own background detail in the text, in front of the audience, seven years later.

  1. The Infinity Gauntlet

    The Infinity Gauntlet

    A left-handed glove forged out of star metal, built to hold all six stones at once.

    It is owned by Thanos and forged from uru by Eitri and the Dwarves of Nidavellir. It can harness the power of all six Infinity Stones together, which makes the wearer able to do whatever they can imagine.

    The scene where it is made is the reason it works as an object. Thanos does not find it. He commissions it, from a workforce he then kills.

  2. The replica in Odin's vault

    The replica in Odin's vault

    A gauntlet that sat in the background of a 2011 film for six years before anybody had to decide what it was.

    A replica of the Infinity Gauntlet is kept in Odin’s vault on Asgard. It first appears in Thor as an Easter egg.

    Marvel Studios later worked out that it could not be the real one, and formed an internal position that the Asgardian gauntlet was a fake, which produced a line in Thor: Ragnarok where Hela looks at it and dismisses it.

  3. The Nano Gauntlet

    The Nano Gauntlet

    The one the Avengers build themselves, right-handed, out of the technology they already had.

    Also called the Iron Gauntlet or the Power Gauntlet, it is made by Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and Rocket using Stark nanotechnology, and it is designed to do what Thanos’s gauntlet did in order to undo it.

    Bruce Banner is the one who uses it, because the stones give off radiation that almost everybody in the room would not survive. During the battle that follows it is passed from person to person, which is the only sequence in these films where the object matters more than whoever is holding it.
