An empath raised alone by a being who used her to help him sleep, who learns what a friend is at roughly thirty years old.
Mantis was raised by Ego as a tool: she put him to sleep, every night, for years, and had no other function and no other company. Pom Klementieff plays her as somebody with no social calibration at all, which is funny until you work out where it came from.
The friendship with Drax is the good part. Two people who cannot read a room find each other, and neither has to translate.
