The leader of the tribe that walked away from Wakanda, who challenges the king, loses, and then keeps turning up when the country needs him.
M’Baku leads the Jabari, the tribe that left Wakanda’s technological society and lives in the mountains, keeping to their own religion and their own grievances. He is introduced as a threat and is one, briefly, and then the film does something better with him than beating him.
Winston Duke plays him with a sense of humour that most of the antagonists in this catalogue are not allowed. The barking, the threat to feed a man to his children, the pause: the joke is that the Jabari are vegetarians, and nobody explains it.
