Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is the one that established what these films could be. The Raimi trilogy is sincere to the point of being unfashionable, and it works: the second film is still the high point of the character on screen, largely because it is about a man who cannot afford his own life.
No Way Home brings him back nearly twenty years later and gives him the best possible use: he is the one in the room who has already lost the person he could not save, and he is the one who talks the youngest version down.
