A weapons manufacturer builds a flying suit of armor to escape his captors, then turns it against the weapons his own company sold.
Tony Stark inherited a weapons company and never questioned it. He is brilliant, rich, and completely uninterested in what happens after a shipment leaves the factory. That ends when he is ambushed during a demonstration in Afghanistan, wounded by one of his own devices, and held in a cave by the people who bought it.
He builds two things while he is down there. The first keeps him alive. The second gets him out.
What makes the film work is that the suit is the smaller half of the story. Stark comes home and shuts down the division that made him famous, which is a far stranger decision for the character than learning to fly, and the rest of the film is about everyone around him refusing to accept it.

The film was released in May 2008. Marvel’s official timeline places the story itself in 2010, two years later, and later material has been built on that placement rather than on the release year.
You will see both numbers used elsewhere, often without explanation. Phase Zero records the release date as a fact about the film and the setting as a fact about the story, and keeps them in separate fields, because collapsing them is how most Marvel timelines end up quietly wrong.

After the credits, Nick Fury is waiting in Stark’s house to talk about something called the Avengers Initiative. It is roughly thirty seconds long, it was not part of the original plan for the film, and it is the moment the shared universe becomes a stated intention rather than a possibility.
