A group of people who have all done something unforgivable are put in a room by somebody who expects them to kill each other.
Nobody in it is an Avenger and most of them have been an antagonist. The film is less interested in whether they can win than in whether any of them can stand being themselves.
It is the closest this run has come to a film about depression, and the strangeness of that arriving inside a team-up is most of what makes it work.
Show detailsThe asterisk
It is part of the title, not a typo and not a footnote marker somebody forgot to close. The film’s own end credits and its promotional posters resolve it: the asterisk stands for The New Avengers.
The Italian release keeps the asterisk for the same reason, and its own reference entry spells the alternative out as I Nuovi Avengers. This is the rare case where a punctuation mark is a plot point, which is also why this catalogue writes the title with it every time.
