Eddie Brock interviews a serial killer, the interview goes badly, and a second symbiote gets a host who is much worse than he is.
The first film was a body-horror premise played mostly straight. This one gives up on that entirely and commits to what audiences actually liked: two personalities sharing a flat and a body, arguing about chickens, ethics and whose turn it is to be in charge.
Cletus Kasady is the counterweight. Where Eddie and Venom are a bad marriage, Kasady and Carnage are a mutual amplification, and the film is clear that the difference between the two pairs is the only thing that makes Eddie a hero.

Andy Serkis directed it, which is a neater fit than it looks. The film’s central relationship is between an actor and a creature that only exists after the fact, and the choice of director is the clearest signal Sony gave about what kind of film it thought it was making.
